Professor Morales's research and teaching program focuses on community economic development in general and how public markets enhance communities in various ways. Since the early 1990s he has focused his research on the history of markets and vendors, the organization of markets and market businesses, the implications of vending for entrepreneurship, the importance of vending for women and ethnic groups, and the articulation of markets with food systems and the general political economy of the city. Professor Morales has worked and lectured on these topics in Germany, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Canada, and around the U.S. His most recent work focuses on the food system, in particular alternative logistical systems for moving food from farm to market.
Professor Morales has articulated his theoretical and research interests in three edited or co-edited books and more than 20 articles and book chapters.
Professor Morales received his graduate degrees from Northwestern University (Ph.D, 1993), the University of Chicago, and the University of Texas at Dallas. He has been recognized for his teaching generally and work with students of color particularly. His research has been supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration, the USDA, the Ford Foundation, and the American Bar Foundation.
Professor Morales is on the board of EDCO Ventures, a nonprofit that develops for-profit businesses in economically distressed areas. He also hosts openair.org, a webpage on street vendors and public markets.
At the University of Wisconsin Professor Morales is affiliated with Chican@/o Latin@/o Studies, Agroecology, Global Studies, and the Collaborative Center for Health Equity of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
