Since 1999, The City of Freeport, Illinois has been working with Vandewalle & Associates to undertake an initiative to revitalize its downtown and riverfront areas.  Starting in the spring of 2013, the two entities teamed up with students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning to further the goals of the project.  These students, under the supervision of Professor Alfonso Morales, make up “Studio 912”.  In order to specialize tasks and provide the most value to the City of Freeport, Studio 912 was split into seven teams, with each focusing on a specific aspect of the project:

  • Brownfields
  • Green Infrastructure
  • Housing
  • Minority Entrepreneurship
  • Transit
  • Passenger Rail
  • Tutty's Crossing

Taken in totality, the seven teams’ work constitutes a comprehensive guide to aid the City of Freeport’s continuing revitalization project.  The work produced by the seven individual teams can be used by similar cities tackling any of the specific group tasks.  Additionally, the comprehensive approach towards revitalization taken by the students can serve as an example to other communities striving for urban revitalization.
